This is a result of more significant movement. The foundation plane has changed enough to cause this once near-perfect rectangular chimney enclosure to be "racked" or skewed as the bottom edge reveals. (Kinda twisted, wouldn't you say?) Most things in a house when new are square, level and plumb. That's how as home owners we determine with the naked eye that things are not quite what they used to be.
